If you purchase diamonds, you look for the best mix of cut, clarity, colour and carat for your money. Rubies and emeralds have natural inclusions, so you look for very good colour saturation. But what do you search for once you acquire opals?
Opals are gorgeous gemstones which flash with fire and colour in a display similar to the rainbow colours on the surface of a soap bubble. This quality is known as iridescence, or professionally "opalescence" when referring to this gem. Also the extent of opalescence and the range of colours displayed establish whether an individual opal is of top quality or not. Opals aren't like other gemstones and their fiery opalescence is caused by natural flaws. So how do you recognize leading top quality?
Broadly speaking, you can find four types of opals, categorised based on their host rock. These are white, black, boulder and crystal opals. White opals are most common and therefore probably the most reasonably priced. They have a milky white background where fire bursts in the center. Black opals are the rarest and look like a stormy black sky that the bright colors flash across. Boulder opals form along narrow cracks in ironstone and are often cut to incorporate some of the ironstone host rock. They're a good less valuable than black opals. Crystal opals are translucent. They generally have a sharp clarity and demonstrate some of the most intense colours of any gemstone.
